JOHOR BARU: The Johor government calls upon cooperation from all sectors especially health providers to make Iskandar Malaysia into a medical hub.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin tasked KPJ Healthcare, which has four private hospitals in Iskandar Malaysia, to come up with a masterplan make the hub a reality.
He said that Johor has the potential to develop into a medical hub to attract visitors to the state to seek medical care.
“There is no timeframe for the masterplan but KPJ Healthcare should also take into consideration the various aspects like providing health services like sterilisation into the plan,” he said after attending a health camp in Permas Jaya here Saturday.
Giving a potential billion dollar development project to a private entity without much information is sure to raise eyebrows amongst critics. The rationale for this decision by the Johor government is unclear. Certainly having four private hospitals in the region should never be a criterion for the award of this large project.
This move will attract criticism of cronyism and adds flavour to corruption charges against the ruling elite. Does this mean that KPJ has already been awarded the contract to develop Iskandar region? Should there not be a proper tender process rather than a “off the cuff” announcement by the MB of Johor?
There needs to more accountability when making press statements. Unfortunately, the aloofness goes all the way to the top.
