Poh Chai Pills Safe For Consumption
KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) — The Health Ministry on Monday verified that batches of Poh Chai Pills registered for distribution in the local market do not contain the prohibited substances Phenolphthalein and Sibutramine.
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican, in a statement Monday said, the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau (NPCB) had conducted laboratory tests on several batches of the pills and found that they did not contain any prohibited substances.
“Consumers need not worry about the safety of this product,” he said.
Mohd Ismail said the Poh Chai Pill, manufactured by Li Chung Shing Tong (Holdings) Ltd, Hong Kong, was traditionally used for the relief of fever, cold, minor diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach aches.
He said the Poh Chai Pills Capsule Form product recalled by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) in Singapore, found to contain Phenolphthaline and Sibutramine, was not registered in Malaysia.
Phenolphthalein is widely used as an acid-based indicator and laxative which has toxic effects and can be dangerous to health, while Sibutramine can cause side-effects such as headaches, constipation, dry mouth, changes in appetite, flu symptoms and skin redness, among others.
